Benefits of migrating from Blackboard LTI 1.0 to LTI 1.3

The following table lists some Blackboard-specific LTI 1.3 benefits. For information on more general LTI 1.3 migration benefits, see our LTI 1.3 and Advantage FAQ article.

Assignment linking

Instructors and students can access linked Gradescope assignments from within Blackboard.

With Blackboard LTI 1.3, specific Blackboard assignments can now be linked to specific Gradescope assignments, which allows instructor and student access to Gradescope assignments from within Blackboard.

Gradescope assignments can’t be accessed or linked from within Blackboard.

Only a course-level link can be set up for access from within Blackboard. Instructors and students have to access the Gradescope course via the Blackboard link and then select the relevant assignment by scrolling through a list.

Syncing Groups and Group Sets to Gradescope Sections

Blackboard Groups and Group Sets can sync to the corresponding Gradescope Sections field on the Roster. These Section values can then be used for all the Sections features in Gradescope.

Groups from Blackboard cannot be synced to Gradescope and all section data on Gradescope has to be imported manually.

Coming soon: Syncing student IDs with a custom parameter between Blackboard and Gradescope

Currently, the LTI 1.3 integration uses the lis_person_sourceid field in Blackboard to sync to the Gradescope student ID field on the Course Roster. Soon, institutions will have an option to override this and add a custom parameter to sync from the student_id field with the LTI 1.3 integration.

The LTI 1.0+API Blackboard integration uses the student_id field in Blackboard to sync IDs to the Student ID column on the Gradescope roster.

Step 1 -  Switching your Integration from LTI 1.0 to LTI 1.3 in Gradescope

Before you start, make sure you have completed the Gradescope 1.3 installation and configuration in Blackboard in your testing, beta, or production environment.

  1. Access your Gradescope account.
  2. To open your integrations page, select LMS Integrations from the account dashboard. You should see your existing Blackboard  LTI 1.0+API integration configuration listed.
  3. To edit your Gradescope LTI 1.0 integration, select Edit in the bottom-right corner.
  4. Uncheck the Enable Blackboard integration for all courses check box in the Blackboard Configuration section.

  1. Save your changes. You'll be asked to confirm your changes.
  2. Select the Yes, update integrations check box. Then, select Update Integrations

How will this integrations update change new and existing courses?

For new courses: This update removes the LTI 1.0 buttons from any new courses created on Gradescope, so any new courses will not have the LTI 1.0 linking options.

For existing courses: Any of your institution's existing Gradescope courses and assignments will remain linked and can still use the LTI 1.0 integration. Additionally, any existing courses are still linked via LTI 1.0 post-migration and can still sync rosters and post grades.

Step 2 – Switching your Integration from LTI 1.0 to LTI 1.3 in Blackboard

  1. For both Ultra and Original Courses, access your Blackboard environment as an administrator.
  2. Go to the Administrator Panel and under Integrations, select LTI Tool Providers.

  1. Scroll down to the Gradescope LTI 1.0 tool, and select the caret next to it to open the menu options.
  2. Select Exclude.

  1.   Then select OK from the confirmation modal.

  1. Go to the Gradescope LTI 1.0 tool again, and select the caret next to it to open the menu options.
  2. Select Manage Placements.
  3. To delete the placement, select Delete.

  1. Your instructors and students will not have access to Gradescope LTI 1.0 links from Blackboard anymore, but any existing LTI 1.0 course and assignment links will be preserved and can be accessed from their Gradescope account. Also, roster syncing and grade posting for these existing courses will still work via LTI 1.0.
