Canvas LTI 1.3 Migration: Duplicating Courses and Assignments from LTI 1.0 for Instructors

Updated

If your institution has recently moved from a Canvas LTI 1.0 to an LTI 1.3 integration, you can use these instructions for duplicating your linked Gradescope LTI 1.0 courses and assignments so that you can reuse them in your LTI 1.3 integration.

If your institution has not changed to an LTI 1.3 integration, you can use the existing Using Gradescope with Canvas as an Instructor guide. If you are unsure whether your institution has recently changed integrations or not, please reach out and ask your Canvas or Gradescope administrator.

To successfully duplicate and convert your linked Gradescope courses and assignments from LTI 1.0 to LTI 1.3, you’ll need to:

  1. Duplicate your previous Gradescope course
  2. Link this new duplicated Gradescope course to your new Canvas course
  3. Link the copied Canvas assignments to their corresponding Gradescope assignments
  4. Sync your Canvas Course Roster to Gradescope

Step One - Duplicating your previous Gradescope Course

This step shows you how to duplicate a previous Gradescope course from within Canvas. If you don't want to duplicate your Gradescope course this way, skip this step and go to Step Two - Link the Gradescope Course
  1. Go to your Courses home page in Canvas.
  2. Open the previous Canvas course that is linked to your previous Gradescope course.
  3. From the Courses menu, select Assignments and then select any Gradescope assignment from the list.

  1. You should now see your Gradescope assignment embedded within your Canvas environment.
  2. In your Gradescope course menu, select Course Settings.

  1. To duplicate the previous Gradescope course, select Duplicate Course.

  1. Complete the Duplicating a Course instructions to finish duplicating your Gradescope course.
To avoid confusion, we recommend renaming the duplicate course the same name as your new Canvas course. You can do this after you have successfully duplicated the course.
With LTI 1.3, you must initiate the course linking process from Canvas. You won't be able to link a Gradescope course to a Canvas Course from the Gradescope Course Settings page, as you could do with LTI 1.0.
  1. Access your new Canvas course.
  2. Select Gradescope from your Canvas Courses menu in the left sidebar.
  3. Choose to link this Canvas course with an existing Gradescope course in the Link to Canvas *** Course modal. This is the duplicated Gradescope course from step 1 that you renamed to reflect your current Canvas course.

  1.  Alternatively, you can choose to link with a new Gradescope course if you don’t yet have a corresponding course created on Gradescope and want to create your Gradescope assignments from scratch.
  2. Select Link Course
  3. Select Close to close the modal. Your Canvas and Gradescope courses for the current term are now linked.
With LTI 1.3, you must initiate the assignment linking process from Canvas. You won't be able to link a Gradescope assignment to a Canvas assignment from the Gradescope Assignment Settings page, as you could do with LTI 1.0.
  1. From your Canvas account, you have two options for how you can link your Canvas assignments to your Gradescope assignments:
    1. Option 1 - Link your assignments by creating a brand new Canvas assignment in the new Canvas course.
      1. Go to the Assignments page in Canvas.
      2. Select Gradescope from the Settings menu (dotted menu).
Your institution may have named the Gradescope tool something different.
      1. Choose to either link your new Canvas assignment with a new Gradescope assignment or to link it with an existing Gradescope assignment from the Link to Canvas *** Assignment modal.
      1. If you are linking with an existing Gradescope assignment, you’ll need to search for the assignment from the dropdown list.
      2. If you are linking with a new Gradescope assignment, finish your Gradescope assignment setup by following the instructions in Creating an Assignment.
      3. The Canvas assignment is now created and linked to your Gradescope assignment.
      4. Next, edit the Canvas assignment so that the linked Gradescope assignment will show in your students’ Canvas to do list and calendars.
      5. Go to the Canvas assignment, and select Edit from its Settings menu (dotted icon).
      6. Scroll to the Assign section, and match the Canvas Available from and Due dates with your Gradescope Release Date and Due Date for the assignments.
Have different due dates for individual students or sections? You can match those individual dates as well for consistency.
      1. To ensure your Canvas gradebook has accurate calculations from the Gradescope assignments, in the Points field, match the Canvas Point Value with the Gradescope Total Points for the assignment.
      2. Select Save or Save and Publish
    2. Option 2 - Import your Canvas assignments linked to your Gradescope assignments from a previous Canvas course.
      1. After you have imported your previous Canvas assignments that are linked to Gradescope, you’ll re-link each assignment with LTI 1.3.
      2. To edit an assignment, select Edit from its Settings menu (dotted menu).
Only edit the assignment from the settings menu because this is what allows you to change the assignment to an LTI 1.3 assignment. Don’t edit the assignment by clicking on its name; otherwise, it will stay an LTI 1.0 assignment.
      1. Select More Options in the Edit Assignment modal.
      2. Scroll down to the Submission Type (External Tool) section.
      3. To search for Gradescope, select Find. You will see the Configure External Tool modal.
      4. Select Gradescope from the tool list. This will allow you to link the copied Canvas assignment to a new Gradescope assignment and convert it to LTI 1.3.
Your institution may call your Gradescope tool something different.
      1. After you select Gradescope, choose whether to link your Canvas assignment with a new Gradescope assignment or with an existing Gradescope assignment from the Link Resource from External Tool modal.
      2. To link your copied Canvas assignment to the duplicated Gradescope assignment that you have already created, choose to link with an existing Gradescope Assignment and then select the assignment from the dropdown list.
      3.  If you chose to link with a new Gradescope assignment, finish your Gradescope assignment setup in Creating an Assignment.
      4. Select Link Assignment to close this modal.
      5. Click Select to close the Configure External Tool modal. Click Save.
      6. Your Canvas assignments are now successfully linked to Gradescope.
      7. Next, you can edit the Canvas assignment so that the linked Gradescope assignment will show in your students’ Canvas to do list and calendar.
      8. Go to the Gradescope assignment, and select Edit from its Settings menu (dotted icon).
      9. Scroll to the Assign section, and match the Canvas Available from and Due dates with your Gradescope Release Date and Due Date for the assignments.
Have different due dates for individual students or sections? You can match those individual dates as well to maintain consistency.
      1. In the Points field, match the Canvas Point Value and the Gradescope Total Points for the assignment.
      2. Select Save or Save and Publish.
  2. Repeat the steps in Option 1 for each Canvas assignment that was copied from your old Canvas course via a Canvas course copy.

Step Four - Sync your Canvas Course Roster

Before you try syncing the roster, make sure your Canvas course is published to students.
  1. Lastly, you’ll need to sync your Canvas course roster to Gradescope
  2. After the course is published, students will need to accept the course invite first before they can sync to Gradescope.
Is your Canvas course roster not finalized yet? In this case, just skip syncing your course roster for now and do this step later.
